Set beneath the 2,300-metre peaks of The Remarkables and along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Jack’s Point has become New Zealand’s defining alpine golf course. Designed by John Darby and opened in 2008, the championship layout moves through tussock grasslands, wetlands, native bush and dramatic schist outcrops with remarkably little intrusion on the natural landscape.
The design relies on contour and exposure, with wide fairways that still demand careful positioning. Wind, elevation and line from the tee remain constant influences, particularly when approaching subtly contoured greens where recovery is rarely straightforward. It is a course shaped as much by its environment as by its architecture — open, expansive and unmistakably of its place.
